Le Club West Island will soon reinvent itself as a multi-purpose training facility.
Next week, the former tennis club on Alton Drive in Beaconsfield will unveil its new ball hockey / lacrosse rink, just a couple of the sports that will use the renovated facility.
Although club owner Mark Kaneb had pushed for the construction of a twin-pad hockey rink on the site, it never came to fruition for a number of reasons, including financing, said club manager Christine Walker.
“But with every plan, you have a backup plan,” added Walker.
“We embrace this new plan even more so because it falls in line with our whole fitness model and performance training because it gives us the diversity we didn’t have with just hockey.” The key is diversity; hence the ball hockey rink can be easily converted into a lacrosse surface. “It’s a full dasher board system for a ball hockey rink,” Walker said. “A portable turf can go down on top for the lacrosse. It’s very similar to the tennis courts, with a rubberized asphalt surface.”
Next month the club plans to open a mini-indoor soccer field, which measures about 90 by 140 to 145 feet, Walker estimates. “The turf field is on the side where we used to have three tennis courts, on about 13,000 square feet of turf. The soccer leagues we have booked right now are 7-on-7.” Local rugby teams and Ultimate Frisbee enthusiasts can also use the turf field.
“We’ve become a home base for a lot of teams that are looking for a training facility.” Walker said. “By virtue of the facility, we now have the ability to offer cross-training. For example, lacrosse compliments hockey very well. It’s a crossover sport.”
The club will also have 8 change rooms, a fitness centre, a restaurant and four international squash courts.“We use to have five squash courts, but we made a home for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu,” Walker said.
The club’s new role as a multi-sport training facility will hopefully fill a void in the community, added Walker. “We’re really excited about the future. Winter tennis isn’t what it once was. It’s a tough industry, some people don’t recognize that. “Now we’re able to offer the public so much more.”
